The name "Fire Cider" aptly describes the intense, warming sensation it provides, thanks to its powerful blend of ingredients. By combining vinegar as the menstruum with a touch of honey, Fire Cider becomes a deliciously balanced elixir that can be enjoyed by the whole family.
In this recipe, we'll use a variety of herbs and roots, including ginger root, chili pepper, turmeric root, horseradish root, garlic, and licorice root. Each ingredient brings its unique properties to the mix, creating a synergistic blend that fights off seasonal bugs and keeps your immune system in top shape.
Ingredients that bring the fire
Roots
Roots are the backbone of a great Fire Cider recipe. They provide robust flavors and essential nutrients that support overall health.
Ginger Root: Ginger is renowned for its digestive benefits, helping to alleviate nausea and improve digestion. Its warming properties stimulate circulation and provide a comforting heat, perfect for a cold-weather tonic.
Licorice Root: Licorice root is known for its soothing effects on the digestive system. It helps to reduce inflammation and supports the body's natural immune response. Additionally, it adds a subtle sweetness to balance the fiery flavors.
Turmeric Root: Turmeric is a powerhouse of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It aids in reducing inflammation and supports overall well-being. Its vibrant color and earthy flavor bring a unique touch to the Fire Cider.
Horseradish Root: Horseradish is famous for its pungent and spicy flavor, which clears sinuses and provides a powerful kick. It stimulates digestion and adds a fiery heat that invigorates the senses.
Bulbs
Bulbs like garlic and onion are essential for their potent antimicrobial properties and their ability to enhance the immune system.
Garlic: Garlic is a natural antibiotic and antifungal agent. It boosts the immune system, helping to fight off infections and common illnesses. Its strong, pungent aroma is a signature element of Fire Cider.
Onion: Onion, like garlic, has antimicrobial properties and supports respiratory health. It adds depth to the flavor profile and complements the other ingredients with its subtle sweetness and sharpness.
Extra Fire
Chili pepper and thyme bring the final touch of heat and unique flavors to the Fire Cider, making it a truly invigorating tonic.
Chili Pepper: Chili peppers are rich in capsaicin, which clears sinuses, boosts metabolism, and provides a fiery heat that warms you from the inside out. The spice level can be adjusted to your preference, making it a versatile addition. For a less spicy cider remove the seeds from your chilis.
Thyme: Thyme offers a different kind of fire—a cooling, soothing heat that clears the lungs and supports respiratory health. It adds a refreshing herbal note that balances the spiciness of the chili peppers.
Ingredients for 20oz tonic
You will need to use a jar that is big enough to allow for some headspace above your infusion. For a 20oz recipe I recommend using a 32oz jar.
640 grams of Apple Cider Vinegar
Honey to taste (50 to 75 grams recommended to cut spiciness)
1 root or 55 grams of Ginger Root
A couple of Chili Peppers, around 16 grams
20 grams of Turmeric Root powder
1 small root or 52 grams of Horseradish Root
1 bulb of Garlic
30 grams of Licorice Root
30 grams of Onion, dried or fresh
10 grams of Thyme
Procedure:
Prep Your Ingredients: Weigh each herb, root, and bulb using a kitchen scale. Chop the ginger and horseradish root if using fresh roots. Press each garlic clove with the edge of a knife. Chili peppers can be used whole or chopped. Honey can be added now or after straining.
Combine and Infuse: Weigh the needed Apple Cider Vinegar and pour it over the herbs in the jar. As you pour, set the intent of your maceration, asking each ingredient to awaken your senses and stimulate your immune system.
Seal and Shake: Seal the jar and shake it to mix the ingredients. Shake the jar daily to aid the maceration. Let it infuse for 2-4 weeks.
Strain and Press: Once maceration is complete, strain the mixture through cheesecloth. Squeeze the cheesecloth thoroughly to extract all the liquid.
Add Honey and Store: If you haven't added honey yet, mix it in now by gently heating the tonic using a double boiler. Pour the finished tonic into a glass jar and seal it tightly. Store in a cool, dry place or in the refrigerator. If using fresh ingredients, consume within a few weeks.
How to Use
Take a swig whenever you feel a sickness coming on or daily to support your immune system. Enjoy the fiery warmth and immune-boosting benefits of this traditional Fire Cider!
